Cellular PVC is composed of an air cell PVC core and capped with a durable PVC outer shell. This air cell core, made mostly of recycled material, acts as an insulator, keeping it cooler than wood or capped composites. Cellular PVCs are typically more durable than capped composites, and will last far longer than wood with little maintenance. They can even be placed in-ground or used for a dock touching water.
Capped Composite decking is made of wood polymer, which is part wood and part recycled plastic, and is capped with a plastic outer shell. Manufacturers of capped composite decking typically do not offer warranties as extensive as for PVC, but they do typically offer less expensive options.
Both products are low-maintenance, needing only occasional cleaning, and are resistant to mold, mildew, and insects. They are splinter-free and most are highly durable. They have at least a 25-Year Performance Warranty; meaning they won’t crack, peel, blister, or delaminate. They also have at least a 25-Year Stain and Fade Warranty.
Now is a great time to think about low maintenance options for decking materials instead of traditional wood. A new deck made from PVC or Capped Composite may cost more initially than wood but will save on maintenance and will last much longer without cracking, warping, or needing to be sanded and stained.

Wood Decks

Pressure-treated lumber is made by pressurizing preservative agents into wood (usually pine) which bond to the wood’s fibers. Cedar and redwood have a warm glowing appearance with decorative straight grains. They contain natural chemicals that are resistant to insects and decay. Unlike treated lumber, these chemicals will wash out of the wood over an extended period of time, and the material will begin to rot.
Tropical hardwoods have a natural beauty that ages gracefully. The tight grain patterns and density of decking such as Ipe make it nearly impervious to water. They can be sealed for a hardwood look or can be allowed to weather and gray naturally.

Along with sanding, a high-quality sealant with mildecide and UV protectant should be applied to the deck every few years, depending on the level of sun exposure.
